Psychologist Vicktor Frank’s landmark work, Man’s Search for Meaning, details a simple, but profoundly life-changing view on human suffering:

Even in the most horrific scenarios, humans can endure — if they can find meaning. 

He should know: he survived The Holocaust. 

His meaning was his book: it’s sold over 16 million copies worldwide and been translated into 50 languages. 

According to Frankl, suffering is inevitable, but how we respond is a choice. After surviving the concentration camps, Frankl observed that those who found PURPOSE were most likely to heal and move on from the psychic wounds they inherited through systemic brutality. 

Purpose didn’t take away their pain, but it gave it new direction. 

Instead of the pain eating them alive inside (destruction), it was used as a healing force outside (creation).

In order to have purpose, one must be an ALCHEMIST of pain. 

They mustn’t fear grief: they must be able to hold their pain and look at it head on to reshape it into something new. They must cherish their pain as a tool to create the way an sculptor lovingly and patiently kneads their clay. 

According to Frankl, humans are so resilient that they can endure almost anything — if they believe it matters.
