Without empathy, a narcissist can’t emotionally connect to others in a genuine way.

Without emotional connection, they can’t care about others in a genuine way.

Therefore, only their own humanity and feelings matter.

For those with emotional empathy, imagine it like this:

• If you were carrying a baby and you dropped it, you’d feel tremendous guilt, worry, and anger at yourself for your error, immediately seeking to soothe, heal, and rectify damage. You’d likely even cry, even though it was a mistake. Whenever you think of this in the future, you’ll feel pain and regret — even if the baby is totally fine — because you feel CONSTANT love for them.
• Whereas, if you dropped your phone, you’d think, Shit! I hope it still works! I don’t want the hassle of going and getting a new one! I need it to function!

To a narcissist, their experience hurting you is as if you were the phone, not the vulnerable human being with feelings.
