The term scapegoat is rooted in an ancient Jewish tradition: the practice of taking a goat and whipping it mercilessly as a substitute to pay for your own sins. It's a form of animal sacrifice.

This scapegoat idea is innately beloved by narcissists who feel allergic to accountability due to the inability to process shame caused by emotional stunting. In Christianity, Jesus serves as the scapegoat: a good man dies so that all the sinners may dodge deserved accountability and feel entitled to heaven.

The concept is simple: let someone or something strong and good suffer in your place--they become a trash receptacle that carries your own shame.

Not all narcissists have scapegoat children: they have golden children much more frequently, because golden children provide grandiosity, idealization, and short-term obsession. For a few years, a golden child makes a narcissist feel as if they're capable of love.

But when they do have scapegoat children, it's generally because they have a gnawing guilt inside them that can't be resolved: a scapegoat is necessary to punish for their sins, because they can't hold themselves accountable.

150 years ago, a lot of American narcissists were human traffickers using enslaved people as scapegoats. Today, that's illegal, so it's often their own children and spouses.

Being the scapegoat child is a disorienting life, fraught with pain. It's an experience of lifelong, nonstop grieving, self hatred, and a gnawing ache to find someone who can return all the love you have in your heart back to you.

But your role is to be the sacrifice, not the loved one--not favored and never chosen.

In the split thinking of a narcissist, you were born ALL BAD, and there's no coming back from that. Their delusion fantasy is that they've been a victim of you since birth--when that is your projection. The scapegoat child is a victim of severe child abuse since birth.
